Can you lower the resolution of an hd camcorder to fit on a dvd?

I am looking to buy a camcorder but am a little confused about HD an non HD camcorder. can i lower res of HD camcorder to fit a standard DVD?

    Can you "lower res of HD camcorder to fit a standard DVD?" Yes – but you do not need to do that manually. Import the video from the high definition camcorder, edit using an appropriate video editor… then use a DVD authoring application (like WinDVD for the Windows environment or iDVD for Macintosh) to take care of the down-convert to standard definition for you.

    You can purchase an HD camcorder and use it as you have used your other camcorders. After you capture, edit, and save your video, your DVD burning software will automatically convert the movie to the correct MPEG-2 format when it burns the dvd.
