As always, it depends on how much you want to spend. I own a Canon HV20, and for what it is- a consumer camcorder- it works well. Compared to a more professional camera, I miss better manual controls, and if you're not going to be doing professional stuff, it's very nice. Shoots SD and HD in 1080i and 1080P in 24 frame. The camera needs enough light to function properly, but is about the same as any other camera in its price range. Lets see, if you're price range is a bit higher, you could check out some of the upper-range prosumer rigs, such as a sony FX-1 or a canon XH-a1. Best answer is to go to a video shop and try out some of the cameras you're looking at.

I'm looking at buying a HD camcorder and have been looking on the web for about a month. From what I can see, the Canon HV20 seems to be the most promising. Unfortunately the JVC GZ HD7 which looks amazing and promised to be a winner seems to have fallen short. So tempted to get it even now but my head is saying to go for the HV20. Superior picture quality and HDV which is proven and relatively easy to edit. A lot of new formats emerging and so much to think about but exciting times. Good luck!!
