Canon 500D, or Nikon D90?

So both cameras are DSLR models, in which are the first of their kind to shoot video. The Canon 500D records in 1080p x 1920p (maximum), or a more common phrase as "1080" resolution, and the cameras sensor is 15.1 MP.

The D90 shoots in 720p x 1280p, or "720" resolution, and is 12.3 MP.

The Canon is 0 w/ kit lens, and the D90 is 00 w/ kit lens.

Its an obvious choice the Canon shoots better video, but why would I still be leaning towards the D90? What am I not seeing?

Is the D90 over-priced, or is the 500D under-priced?

Does the D90 have better/more features?

I would use the camera for pictures, more than video, but I’d just like to know your opinion :)

1.) Video on these cameras is just a gimmick feature. Don’t choose one based on video.
    2.) The D90 has a better sensor
3.) The D90 excels at lower light high ISO shooting. You may not know how much of an advantage that is until you hit a challenging situation, crank up the iso to 3200 and still get a great photo.
I’m not a Cannon basher I just think in this category the D90 wins.

I like Nikon D90.The D90 is a beautiful camera. If you’re thinking about a D5000, D60, or lower grade, forget it. Just buy the D90. You’ll be very happy you did and won’t outgrow it as fast, if at all. I will plug the D5000…it’s a nice camera as well…D60 size/weight/feel, with most D90 guts. However, you might as well spend a bit more and go with the D90, especially with the 18-105VR kit lens. That lens, in my opinion, is better than the 18-55VR, despite what Ken Rockwell says about it.

Disregard video. It’s only a feature and you can’t depend much on it for quality video recording.

Generally, Canon makes better lenses so be prepared to spend more on those later. Generally again, Nikon is more up-to-date technologically, but in this case, the 500D seems way ahead.

The 500D’s sensor size is smaller than the D90’s. At a higher megapixel rating, this is more detrimental to the 500D as more detail is expected to come out from the smaller sensor. The D90 then is expected to be more superior in terms of picture quality.

First, let me up front and state I am a Nikon user (presently use a D200) and think Nikon overall does a great job designing cameras and has great metering systems. Truth is, both Nikon and Canon make excellent cameras. Choose what works best for you.

Here are a few things to consider:

The Nikon D90 SLR Digital Camera Kit with Nikon 18-105mm VR Lens is being sold for $1,139.95 at B&H Photo and they are providing free shipping. Below is a link for B&H, you will need to click on the add to cart link to see the final price.

Also, Adorama has the same price, but not sure about shipping.

I hear great things about the D90, I also included a review from dpreiw, com.

    Good luck.

    Mark
