What is the best digi-SLR, with the features I want?
Hi, I am currently using a Canon EOS Rebel XTI. I would like to upgrade and I wish for the following features, but have researched and am not sure what one to get.
In no particular order:
1.)Battery grip available. (so I can add 2nd batt for more shots)
2.)LiveView (so I can see what I shoot on the screen. )
3.)GPS Tracking ability (to see where the pic was taken)
4.)REALLY want 1080p (if possible) HD video recording, like on Canon T1i (so I can use for video and remove my camcorder from my bag)
5.)ability to attach to computer to control
6.)kinda like 5, ability to attach hard drive to record direct to USB external
7.)also last, the Sony alpha 900 has dual (2) slots for recording to, which would be nice so I don’t have to load empty cards as often.
I know this sounds like a lot of features, but hope to find a camera that will do all of this. I liked the Sony a900, but it doesn’t do video, which I really wanted. Any suggestions? Or am I asking for too many features from too many manufacturers products in one device?
Thanks!!

A Canon 5D II, will almost get you there with a few added gizmos, but it only has a single slot, for a CF card. Adding a WFT-E4A Wireless File Transmitter, will get you the grip, and the ability to record to USB external. I kinow I’ve seen a GPS unit for it, but couldn’t find it quickly.
It covers 2, 4, 5 right out of the box.
my suggestion

The Canon’s $8,000 top of the line model will do that, minus # 4.
The top of the line Canon and Nikon units already have a vertical grip, so no #1 for them.
#2 is problematic, unless the new Canon or Nikon allow a usable live view at all times. I would think they do, but haven’t tried. Otherwise, you are confined to the Oly 620 or Sony A300/A350.
#3 can be done on several brands, but if you want the GPS data stamped right into the photo, Nikon and Canon have some really expensive adapters to this…
#4 sticks you to that camera, so far
#5 To the best of my knowledge, this is available from all brands, in one form or another. The software may be an extra-cost option, like Nikon.
None of them will give you #6. DSLR’s aren’t made that way.
Some of the Oly’s have dual XD/CF slots. I seem to recall one of the Canon 1D series having both CD and SD card slots.
I don’t think this camera exists myself… you can get close though.
Canon 5D Mark II would be your great choice. It does not have all features you want but nearest
1.Battery grip available
2. Live view functionality
3.Full HD video capture at 1920×1080 resolution for up to 4GB per clip ; HDMI output
