Since the XL2 does standard definition DV, any video editor should be just fine – it depends how sophisticated you want to get. So… MovieMaker is bundled with Windows XP (SP2). If you want more sophisticated video editing capabilities, Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere always float to the top.

Your bigger issue is getting the video into your computer. ALL miniDV tape based camcorders transfer video the same way. Your computer needs a firewire port. If it does not have one, hopefully it has an expansion slot so you can add one. You also need a firewire cable.

Firewire400, IEEE1394a, DV and i.LINK are all the same thing. USB won’t work. USB-firewire adapter/converters won’t work, either.

Connect the firewire cable to the DV port of the camcorder and the firewire port of the computer. Camcorder needs to be in "Play" or "VCR" mode. MovieMaker will capture the video.

Get the XL2’s instruction manual at canon.com

    Refer to page 101.

I have an XL2 and I use Sony Vegas/DVD architect. It works seamlessly!
Vegas is consistently rated one of the best editing programs. Its a lot easier to use than adobe or Avid. With the XL2 there is a native non-HD Widescreen that works perfect with Vegas(wont stretch, keeps perfect aspect ratio) Good luck
