Should i buy a DSLR camera?
I have wanted to buy a DSLR camera for quite some time now, but i am just wondering if i actually need one. I want a DSLR to be able to adjust functions manually to create more creative images. I love the idea of being able to swap between different lenses and have ideas of creating long exposure images for say creating motion blur on the London eye or photographing fireworks. I want to do photography as a sort of serious hobby and feel that my current point and shoot fuji camera is limiting what i can do. I am looking at a Canon eos 500D which is a semi-professional DSLR and can get this camera with a 18-55mm EF-S kit lens for £500. This camera can also record video footage in 1080p HD quality! I think i should go for it and buy one; has anyone recently changed from a compact point and shoot to a DSLR? Oh, and i have been playing with my dads Canon eos 450D for the last 2 weeks and love it and also don’t mind carrying it around with me. Any advantages and disadvantages of DSLR’s are welcome and any tips for a beginner would be even more welcome.
Kind Regards, Tom
Thanks for all your help!

Its actually a good idea to start out with an inexpensive camera and Canon is one of the best brands out there I’m a professional i started out years ago with a canon DSLR and there are alot of things you can do with an SLR that you cant do with a point and shoot. I now have a 5D. I have to warn you that once you start to get DSLR’s u would be tempted to get new lens and upgrade lol u will learn that different lens does different effects and has different purposes, but 18-55 sounds like a great lens to start out with. might wanna consider getting a external flash it does wonders to the quality of light
You should buy a DSLR. I am partial to Nikon. The D90 is an awesome camera for a serious amateur. The most important part of the camera is the lens. A D90 with some really good fixed lenses will take stunning pictures and you can use every photographic trick in the book on these cameras.
of course SLR cameras are the best in the case of picture quality. but I think it’s heaviness will limit the usage. I have 2 cameras. non of them SLR. first one is a very good quality but very limited functionality Ultra Compact Lumix fx2 camera. that I can use it every where and for just this reason I have tons of pictures that I have taken them with this. the other camera is an ultra zoom very much functional Fujifilm s5800 that is much more lighter than SLR but because of it’s size , I don,t use it as much as I have used Lumix. so I suggest you to use a lighter camera and believe me to have a much better quality pictures is not important for at least 80% of situations. for example you can use an ultra zoom light Lumix camera such as fz18 or fz28 that will take so many good pictures. or if you decided to buy a SLR then I will suggest you to buy Olympus E420 or E520 those are much more lighter than Canon and you will not lose any thing but just a couple more weight.
