One: minidv are cheaper and more trustables than the dvds. Second: it is faster that u download the minidv data from your camcorder to your pc, instead of from your DVD camera to your pc. A cassette is easier to read than a dvd. Third: MInidv Cameras are smallers and come with more functions like slow motion rec, and allows you to record a high quality still image. Remember, once you finish to record a dvd, you need to burn it (like when you full close an audio cd from Nero) to play it on your standar dvd player.
