i also need a recommendation for video editing software..

Assuming all you need is a free, bare-bones, easy to use video editor, you should use either windows movie maker (windows) or iMovie (mac)- both come standard on any new computer, or are available as a free download from windows.com or apple.com. The newest updates of each program have an "automatic" function which allows you to plug your mini DV camera directly into your computer via a firewire cable- the computer will read your entire tape, make a movie, and then save it to whatever file format you want.
If you want a bit more control over your final product, it is easy enough to manually import the tapes by adding transistions/titles/effects/music- just open the help file and there should be a topic that walks you through the process.
ULead Video Studio 10 is a good piece of editing software. It is pretty simple to use and also helps with getting video off of your camcorder. Make sure you have the system requirements beforehand. Video Editing is demanding.
If you have a DVD camcorder make sure you get plenty of discs. The highest quality setting will only give you 20 minutes per DVD.
If you have a tape or hard drive camcorder your computer will need to have a firewire port.

Your camera should have come with a firewire cord, a usb cord, or both. This is how you will go about connecting the camera to the computer. As far as software is concerned, there are so many kinds, and unfortunately, all of them have something over the others. I use Pinnacle Studio v.9 (v.10 is already out). It is pretty user friendly, but if you are not technologically inclined, all of them will be a little tough at first. But this vacation will be a great way to cut your teeth. Pinnacle will come with instructions on how to capture your video to the hard drive. Also, If you don’t have a really big hard drive, I suggest getting an external hard drive. six minutes of video can take up to 1 GB of memory!
